If you didn’t hear about Dr. Gabor Maté yet, I am here to tell you about him. He is one of my role models in terms of what I want to be when I grow up, haha. Well, I’m all grown up already, however I am growing by learning and being a better person every day. He is right on point explaining it in very simple terms how cortisol is the root of most mental health issues. Cortisol is good and bad at the same time. It’s the hormone that our bodies produce in the ‘fight or flight’ reaction. Many times we are not even aware that we are in a state of ‘fight or flight’ as we’ve grown so familiar with having stress and many people tend to believe that it’s the way life is. There is some truth in there, lives in the western capitalistic worlds are stressful, it’s a given. But then, there is a high cost to pay for accepting this stress as a given. Too much of anything is not good as is too little of anything. Balance, balance, balance!
But first is awareness. You need to realize how the ‘unseen’ processes in your physiology when repeated day in and day out will cause wreaking havoc on your body, mind, and soul. The cost of the hidden stress, the way that Dr. Gabor Maté words it, is beyond the knowledge we are prepared to accept.
There is a straight line connection between the mind and the body, it’s a known fact by now. Cortisol production, is stimulated by any kind of stress, including worries about the day-to-day life, dealing with physical pain, dealing with chronic diseases, and so on. Cortisol affects your nervous system directly, your brain chemistry changes, your body physiology is out of balance and when persistent it may bring your body in a state of illness, including chronic illness and mental illness. In a nutshell, everything is connected and does affect you in all aspects of your being.
Here is the book that I highly recommend, written by Dr. Gabor Maté. Learn from these teachings as they are essential to understanding your health and improving the relationship between your mind, body, and soul.
